My Need for More Light

When people reach the marvelous age that seems to necessitate the use of bifocals they also need about one-third more light to compensate for the loss of light reaching the retina. Since I am there and have noticed this need it caused me to wonder if my need for another kind of light is also greater.

In John 8:12, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, . . .”

The older I live the more complex life appears to be. Issues that were so plain to me in my twenties have with exposure to life’s dilemmas grown more challenging. Sometimes I hear people speak with such absolute moral conviction about ethical issues and I find myself wondering how they can do that. How can they be so sure their truth is the truth?

It is on such occasions I find myself needing more of the light that Jesus proclaims Himself to be. Age brings an understanding that each person’s walk is unique. Each person’s experiences and pressures are unlike any other’s. We can never really say to another, “I know how you feel.” We don’t know how another feels. We can guess. We can guess from our own pool of experience. But it is never the same as another’s.

The older I get the more I need Jesus, “The Light of the World.” How glad I am He is always there.
