Spring of Life -
In the latter years of the
Pagan Roman Empire holiday crowds filled with bloodlust
gathered in the city arenas for games involving the deaths
of gladiators. They were battles to the death. Circus events
entertained the masses. These events too involved feats of
daring that ended in either honor and riches for the victors
or an ignominious death to please the bloodthirsty
spectators. This did not happen all at once. It was a
growing phenomenon that slowly escalated from daring do to
suicide and murder.
Fox television network is on
the way with programs like Guinness Book of Records. Now it
is people lighting themselves on fire. That holds the
curious for now. But soon we will grow used to such feats
and the ante will have to be upped. Little by little just a
tiny step at a time we will watch until someone dies. We
will all profess shock. Let us not be so hypocritical. The
train has left the station. The destination is sure.
People have not changed. The
nature of man is the same as it always has been since the
fall of Adam. We are titillated by someone elses
danger while we sit in the safe comfort of our home. We are
even reminded not to try these things at home.
Does history have to
continue to cycle? It appears so. It will continue til Jesus
comes and finally puts a stop to the bloodlust and saves us
