H. Roger Bothwell

Bravery

It happens here every year but this time it was especially tragic. A small boy fell through the ice on a local lake last night. He survived but the 30-year- old man who went to his rescue also crashed through the ice and he died.

Surely there must be a special place in heaven for individuals who selflessly risk all for someone else. I am sure he was well aware of the danger involved in going to help the child. We all do. But he went anyway and paid the ultimate price.

Bravery and heroism surprise us. It appears sometimes in the persons we least expect to be brave. Being brave does not mean not being afraid. It means being afraid and pressing ahead to do what has to be done.

Jesus was brave when he went to Jerusalem that last time. He knew they were waiting to kill him. Just a few months before when He went to Bethany to resurrect Lazarus His disciples warned Him of the danger. When He told them He was going Thomas said, “Well, let’s go and die with Him.” That was brave. I wish we could remember Thomas as Thomas the Brave instead of Doubting Thomas.
