Beautiful Things

All of us like beautiful things. It is so mentally delicious to feast one’s eyes on beauty. It can be a sunset, a flower, an athlete in motion, a poem or another human being. It is so interesting how little things can make something lovely or vice versa. The very same face can transform from ugly to beautiful merely by applying a smile. Eyes can be chilling or alluring depending on the attitude of the brain that sits behind them.

God loves beautiful things. However He also loves things that are not so beautiful because He knows with just a few touches He can make it beautiful. Solomon once told us in Eccl. 3:11, “God has made everything beautiful in its time.”

When something fulfills its reason for being, when it contributes to the well-being of a whole community, church, school or family it becomes beautiful. Yesterday afternoon I watched a college student teach a roomful of second graders. She was doing a great job. One of the little boys who was attentively listening to her turned to me and said, “She is such a good teacher. Please give her a good grade.” It was a beautiful moment. Even time can be beautiful. An excellent example is the moments we spend in prayer and study of God’s word growing more and more like Him.
