Our Purpose in
Life
One of life's great
struggles is the determination of one's life purpose.
Sigmund Freud believed death was our purpose. The social
biologists Miller and Dollard believed our purpose is to
perpetuate the continuance of our genes. Psychologist Carl
Rogers believed our purpose was to become a fully
functioning being.
Jesus prayed to His Father
(Our Father) in John 17:26, "I have made you known to them,
and will continue to make you known in order that the love
you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in
them."
God has a purpose for us. We
are not an accident of chance. He has designated that we
should be filled with His love. The result is eternal life
and glory for Him in our resulting happiness.
Freud was dead wrong. Miller
and Dollard are genetically mistaken. But Carl Rogers comes
close for the only way anyone of us can ever be fully
functioning is when we are filled with God's love. It is
then that life becomes worth having forever. Then we will
continue to grow more and more into the likeness of the one
who said, "Let us make man in our image." That is our
purpose.
