The Difficulty of Knowing Something

Knowing something is not always such an easy thing. The difficulty is not that we have deficient memories. The problem is one of discernment. Can we know something because we have read it or seen it in the media? Most of us know better than that. Newspapers want readers, television wants viewers and radio wants listeners so what we read, see and hear is often distorted to tease us into giving them our attention. The result is something less than truth.

What about the testimony of authorities? Everyone has a bias. It is not that people deliberately lie but they select the truths that best fit their already established view on something or someone.

What if we have seen it for ourselves? Even we have biases. Two individuals often see the same event and tell completely different stories.

Being wise is knowing that we don’t know very much. When we are young we know everything. When we are old we don’t know so much. Knowing that is what makes old people wise.

Paul once said in 1 Corinthians 2:2, “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” Paul was a very bright and wise man. He had learned how difficult it is to know things. What he did know he shared with us. It was this. God loves us very much.
