"Just a Quick Question"

Have you noticed that the word “question” has a new companion? It is the word “quick. When I am driving I listen to talk radio programs and more times than not when a caller wants to ask something they are going to ask “a quick question” or “two quick questions.”

Whatever happened to “slow questions?”

Actually I don’t think they ever existed.

This is now taking over at school. Every student who catches me in the hall or enters my office always has a “quick question” for me.

Now I know what they mean. They are hoping not to interrupt and think they can get a “quick answer” and be gone. Rarely does that ever happen. Most usually the “quick question” results in a “slow answer” that usually demands lots of explaining.

Maybe this is the result of living in an age of fast food or television programs that create huge personal dilemmas only to quickly solve them with sweet background music in the last 30 seconds of the drama.

Today I heard a teacher say to his class, “I have a few ‘quick comments’ to make before class is over.” Now I thought, “That is strange. He had an entire class period. Was it also a “quick lecture” accompanied by a “quick quiz?”

I am guessing that this too shall pass like most other things and someday we will be back to just plain “questions.” But until then how about a “quick devotional thought” like “Jesus loves you?” That was quick. Or how about, “If you love Jesus and make Him the Lord of you life you will get to live forever?” That was quick. But wait a moment. “The forever part.” That certainly is not quick. We don’t want it to be quick. Praise God that part is so slow it will never come to an end.
