Auto Parts Jewelry

Last evening I rode the subway in Boston. (I can never ride the MTA without thinking of that old song about the man who got on the MTA and never returned – no he never returned.) As I was watching people come and go as we went from stop to stop a teenage girl got on and sat across from me. I could not help noticing her fashion statement. The way she chose to decorate herself was quite unique.

The first thing you had to notice was she had two rings in her bottom lip. This created an interesting appearance. That was not all. The rest of her accessories we indeed coordinated. She was wearing automobile hose clamps, the ones with the screw that alters the size of the clamp’s opening depending upon which way you turn the screw.

I noticed the first one on her finger and was amused because it is something I have seen small children do. But then I noticed she had two on each wrist. Then I saw two of them about her neck. She looked like a walking advertisement for an auto parts store.

I felt quite sad for her as I remembered Paul’s statement in 1 Timothy 2:9, “I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.”

Well, no one could accuse her of spending lots of money on her decorations. I was wishing she could know that real beauty has nothing at all to do with what we hang on ourselves. Real beauty comes from within. It shines through compassionate and caring eyes. It radiates from a voice that speaks loving things. It imprints itself upon us by unselfish acts of kindness.

I wish I could have explained to her she did not need anything more than a genuine smile to make herself attractive. I wanted her to know if Jesus lived in her it would be the only decoration she would ever need.
