Don’t Die - Live

General George S. Patton, famous for his brilliant command of U.S. forces during World War II, was after the war assigned as the military governor of Bavaria. What intrigues me is he was relieved of this position because he established and maintained policies that were deemed to be lenient toward our former enemy. I wonder if he understood something everyone else needed to learn.

In the film portraying his life he is quoted as saying, “No one ever saves his country by dying for it but saves his country by making the other fellow die for his country.”

I love this comment because it radically shakes our conventional thinking about dedication and loyalty.

While we should be willing to die for our country we must do our best to live. We must be the last man standing. After the smoke and stench of battle has cleared we must be left on our feet with our goals and purposes intact.

It is the perfect illustration of the truth that living for our faith is better than dying for it. I must be willing to die for Jesus but I can serve Him best alive. We memorialize martyrs and rightly so however I do not need a tomb to visit. The world is full of tombs. I need a living example of powerful right living to inspire me to take up the cross of Jesus and bear it through trial and be left standing tall with Satan crushed beneath my feet. That is what I need. That is what the church needs. We need living role models of victorious living.
