The Deep Things of God

It is impossible to give my dog too much attention. The more you notice her the closer she gets to you. She doesn't just lean into you she presses her eighty pounds against you. I have to watch that she doesn't knock people over. When we are out for rides in the truck she will, from the rear jump seat, place her head on my shoulder and ride that way for miles. She tries so hard to understand when we talk to her. She cocks her head as if to say, "Please don't stop talking to me. I am trying. Say it again and I'll get it."

The last evening Jesus was with His disciples He said, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now." John 16. I am sure it was not only a matter of not being able to bear them but to understand Him. In Matthew 13 He talked about our ears being dull, about our not being able to grasp what He was saying. There are times in my classroom when I literally struggle for words as I try to explain concepts so needed by my students. The frustrating thing is so many of them don't even try. Unlike my dog they don't give me that "say it again" look. Instead I get an "oh- hum" look.

In I Corinthians 2 Paul speaks of the "deep things of God" and the Holy Spirit's efforts to communicate God's thoughts to us "that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God." I truly believe if we are persistent, we will, even it takes a lot of time, understand.
