Spring of Life -
H.
Roger Bothwell
Ice and snow have come to New England. It's lovely. But getting about can
be a bit treacherous if one is not careful. Today, my sister, who is much
older than I, was approached by a younger person who offered to help her
across the street. Always the gracious lady, she accepted the help with
smiles and a "Thank you very much." Once on the other side she busied
herself in her purse waiting for the Good Samaritan to be on his way so she
could go back across the street. She never had wanted to cross but didn't
know how to refuse such kindness.
I must say she is a better person than I am. This weekend as I entered my
mother's nursing home an elderly lady in a wheel chair accosted me with a
sales pitch. She had a box of homemade costume jewelry pins on her lap.
She wanted two dollars. Quickly I gave her the two dollars. Then I did the
unthinkable, I'm not always the sharpest tack in the box, I told her to keep
the pin. She insisted I take it. Next I said, "But I don't want the pin. Just
keep the money." I hurt her. How could I have been so stupid?
In Colossians 3:8 Paul instructs us to always be kind. Kindness is a
hallmark of one on the Christian walk. Kindness melts hostility. Kindness
overwhelms people with surprise and joy. In Romans 12 Paul tells us to
treat even our enemies with kindness by feeding them and giving them a
drink. What I need to do is buy two or three pins from her.
Gracious Kindness
