Perfection

Long I stood staring into the bowl of raw chocolate cookie dough. Should I or shouldn't I dip out a nice round ball of gooey sugar, eggs, flour and chocolate chips? I did. It was perfect.

The first cookies to come out of the oven were slightly baked and still soft. They melted in my mouth. They were perfect.

The last cookies to come forth from the oven were overdone. The baker had been distracted and didn't get to them in time. They were black around the edges, hard and crisp in the middle. They were perfect.

Perfection comes in many forms. A twelve-month-old child can be perfect as can a ten-year-old child. Each at their own stage. Each at their own place. Each with their different gifts.

When Jesus called us in the Sermon on the Mount to be perfect as God is perfect He was not calling for uniformity in behavior nor beliefs. He was calling us to be the best we could be at the time and place we are in life. Be a good son or daughter. Be a good parent. Be a good grandparent. Each time, each stage of life comes with unique opportunities. The woman who gave her two mites gave the perfect gift. Levi Matthew who gave a banquet for his friends with Jesus as guest of honor gave the perfect gift. We don't have to be the most talented person in the room nor the smartest kid on the block to give the perfect gift. The gift is perfect when it is given in love. You are perfect when you accept His grace.
