Jumping To Conclusions

Tonight I got hopelessly lost in a maze of dark roads. New Englander's are notorious parsimonious when it comes to road markers. Further more it was so dark I couldn't read the few signs that did exist. I was on my way to a banquet at a country club that really was in the country. When it was past time for me to be there I spotted lights ahead in the dark. It was a liquor store. "Aha," I thought, "Guys in a liquor store would surely know how to get to the local country club." Sure enough. Using their directions I was at the country club in five minutes.

A wise policy is to hold one's judgment til one knows all the facts. If a church member had seen me going in or coming out of the liquor store they could have easily jumped to some wrong conclusions. If I tried to defend myself if accused they could have thrown I Thessalonians 5:22 at me, "Abstain from all appearance of evil."

I need to talk with Paul about that text. One of the most wonderful things about Jesus was His acceptance of everyone. He went to questionable places and socialized. His enemies rightfully accused Him. "The scribes and Pharisees murmured saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

We are the salt of the earth and we are quite worthless if we stay in the saltshaker.
