Spring of Life -
Probably all of us at some time or other have wiled away a few minutes
doing a word puzzle. When we first look at them they appear to be a square
filled with random letters, but as we take the time to look carefully, one by
one, meaningful words start to appear, things like eight colors, five
presidents, four cats, three words that begin and end with the letter R. Soon
with a little patience we locate all of them.
There are times when I feel stupid when trying to read things. While I know
the meaning of each word yet I cannot grasp the author's ideas. The
sentence structure and the depth of thought are beyond me. There are days
when I pick up my Bible and feel that way. There are chapters in Romans
and Galatians where Paul's massive intellect overwhelms my average brain.
I just want to lay my Bible aside and quit trying because it is hard work. I
have discovered strenuous mental activity is harder than swinging an ax and
mallet to split firewood.
The wonder of Scripture is the basic message of love can be understood by a
three-year-old and yet there are passages, like a word puzzle, that require
diligent concentration and also like a word puzzle; hints. When I need a
hint I claim James 1:5 where God promises to give us wisdom if we ask. If
there is a passage that has confounded you, go back to it. Give it all the
mental discipline you can bring to bear and then pray about it. Soon you
