If We Are Smart
Even though Paul told Timothy, "Let no man despise thy youth." one must
accept the fact that the person with the most experience knows some things
younger people do not know. Even if they are smarter than the older they
still don't have as much experience. I realize many people with experience
never learn from it. However, I am speaking of what ought to be.
While reading a book my grandson recommended, I came across the
following. "The duty of old people is to be anxious on behalf of the youth.
It is the duty of the young to scorn the anxiety of the old." Phillip Pullman.
God is the oldest guy around. He is what ought to be. Therefore He is the
father who really does know best. That is why we need to pay special
attention to His law. Why does He ask us not to tell bad stories about
others? He knows what happens to the reputation of the teller as well as the
object of the stories. Why does He tell us not to steal? He knows what
happens to a community, a family and a person when someone steals. God's
written laws are an expression of natural law.
Isn't it interesting that we often times think we are the ones who know best?
Then the fruit can be anything from prison to broken homes and broken
hearts. David wrote in Psalms 119, "Give me understanding, and I
shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart." If we
are smart enough to understand we will indeed do what He says.
