- Spring of Life -

H. Roger Bothwell

Mike Royko

Mike Royko died. I feel like I have lost a friend. What is strange about this is I never met the man. I never saw him. I could probably have passed him on the street and not noticed him. He would have looked like ten thousand other balding senior citizens. So why should I miss him.

As often as I could (almost daily) I read his newspaper column. Mr. Royko had a sharp wit and honesty that spoke to me. A good share of his daily columns were about life in Chicago. I have never lived in Chicago but that does not matter. I have discovered that people are people are people. If you write about the human experience it does not matter what city or country is involved.

Mr. Royko was often offended by stupidity and the misuse of power. He championed the causes of people who he felt got a bad break or were mistreated by the powerful. He was so brash on one occasion he actually started a riot and was burned in effigy. You have to like that about a guy.

I am suspicious that courage lurks in the hearts of millions of people who will never have opportunity to exhibit their bravery. But once in a while someone comes along who does have the chance and it is refreshing to see it. All of us admire courage and wish we had an amble supply.

In 1 Cor. 16:13 & 14, Paul wrote, “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love.”

I am intrigued that Paul equates courage with the seasoning of our behavior with love. I am not surprised. It fits the rest of his work. If the world needs anything it needs people of courage. It needs people who will pause, think and then do the right thing.

I'm Roger Bothwell and my address is hrb1@tiac.net or 151 Old Farm Rd. Leominster, MA 01453. Thank you for your support of our faith ministry.
