- Spring of Life -

H. Roger Bothwell

So Much Darkness, So Much Light

One evening last week my sister and I were standing on our back deck looking at the comet when suddenly the city in the valley below us disappeared. Every light vanished and for the first time in the moonlight I saw the valley the way the native inhabitants used to see it.

Fortunately for the residents of the city the electricity soon came back on but I found myself regretting it had to be so soon. The valley was delightfully beautiful basking in just the light of the moon.

It is no wonder the Bible makes so many references to light. 232 as a matter of fact. Light provides us not only with the ability to perceive items not in direct contact with our person but it adds color and mood. Without it there can be no life. Even those creatures that live at the bottom of the sea beyond the pale of light would perish because the food chain that supports even them would break down without light upon the surface.

Creation began with light. Salvation begins with the light of God’s grace penetrating the darkness of men’s minds. Jesus calls Himself the light of the world. He illuminates our minds with the truth about God. He endeavors to break through the dark ideas that have held sway since sin entered this beautiful world. He has tried His best to help us understand that salvation is a gift and no amount of work contributes to it. Yet I know individuals who have been Christians all their lives and still do not understand. Just last week someone said to me about a deceased friend, “John will surely be in heaven he was such a good man.” Ah, when will we understand. It is the goodness of Jesus that saves. This is the light that must shine. This is the message we must share with a darkened world.
