H. Roger Bothwell

Christology Class

When we saw his hand go up we groaned inside wondering what inane question he would ask this time. It was a seminary class in “Christology” taught by Dr. Thomas Blinco. Several of us looked forward to Dr. Blinco’s class as the brightest spot in our education and we were covetous of each minute. On more than one occasion I left class in tears with my heart bursting with a love for Jesus I had never know before.

During one lecture regarding the emotional sufferings of Jesus one of my friends rose to his feet with tears flowing. He interrupted Dr. Blinco to tell him he just had to stop the lecture long enough to express his love for Jesus. Such was the quality of what we were receiving.

Therefore we were annoyed by one particular student who somehow always managed to interrupt with what we thought was stupidity.

On this particular day his question was right on par. Even the ever so Christlike Dr. Blinco was disturbed by the insipid question and responded, “I am sorry I do not have time for that now.”

Several of us nodded with approval eager to have the lecture continue. We all thought Dr. Blinco had done the right thing. Everyone but Dr. Blinco.

The next class period after the beginning prayer Dr. Blinco turned to the young man whose question he had brushed off and said, “Last class period, you asked a question that was very important to you. I was rude and did not answer. Because I was rude in front of the entire class I now apologize to you in front of the entire class. What was your question, please?”

I was stunned. I was totally overwhelmed. No longer did I see a teacher standing in front of a class teaching us about Jesus, I saw Jesus. That one simple act of kindnesss and humility taught me more about “Christlikeness” than any other experience during my stay at the seminary.

I'm Roger Bothwell and my address is hrb1@tiac.net or 151 Old Farm Rd. Leominster, MA 01453. Thank you for your support of our faith ministry.
