Why Are You A Christian?

One of my favorite questions to ask my students is, "Why are you a Christian?" Considering the fact that I teach at Christian college one might think I would get concise well thought out responses. Rarely does that happen. I get everything from, "I don't know" to "My parents raised me that way." Once in a while I get, "Because Christians are morally good people." I am going to guess that means other religions do not teach nor practice morality. Sometimes I get suspicious looks when I tell them Buddhists, Muslims and others have high moral standards.

What I am hoping is someone will say, "Christianity is the only religion in the world that offers salvation as a gift. Every other system is one of working to please God." Some of you might be thinking, "But the Christian church I attend tells me I have to do such and such to be saved." Paul responses to that in Galatians 5 by saying, " Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing." You can take out the word "circumcised" and put in any other religious requirement. Paul is not merely speaking of circumcision. He is proclaiming the core principle of the Good News.

There is one more very important difference between Christianity and all other religious systems. Christianity is the story of God seeking men. It is the story of revelation. Other systems are people seeking God. This is what makes Christmas so special. God came to us.
