The Goal of Our Faith
Goal setting is important. Without a clearly defined goal we waste precious
time and finite energy wondering about getting nowhere. Sometimes that's
nice if that is the purpose of the next two weeks or so. But in the overall
scheme of life everyone needs a purpose and a destination of some
definition. Life is too precious to waste away purposely going anywhere that
usually ends up being nowhere.
We should establish a goal for our faith. The goal of our faith is to
reproduce the character of Christ as accurately as possible in this frail body
that is still subject to the passions of the flesh. Those aren't going to be
removed until this corruption puts on incorruption. See I Corinthians 15 and
Romans 7. Recently I heard someone say the goal of faith should be
salvation. But one need not have a goal for something they already have and
salvation is a gift instantly ours when we make Jesus the Lord of our life.
See I John. We set goals for something we don't yet have.
One thing exciting about setting a goal of being like Jesus is the inherent
aspect of eternal growth. While we never will arrive, even in the heaven, we
will constantly grow and thus gain more and more happiness. It is like the
frog jumping across the road half of the remaining distance with each jump.
The frog can get so close it can benefit from the proximity to the goal. We
richly benefit by being in the neighborhood as we become more and more
like the one who died for us.
