The Fairness of God
When I was a boy one of my favorite Bible stories was the night an
earthquake opened Paul and Silas's prison doors. The earthquake didn't
knock down the walls of the jail. It just opened the doors and all the
prisoners ran away. But Paul and Silas lingered. The jailer needed them.
Luke tells us the jailer asked what he had to do to be saved and really live.
They told him all he had to do was believe, to trust Jesus.
I remember thinking this seemed to easy. How was it he got such an
uncomplicated way to heaven and the rich young ruler had to give away
everything he owned? It seemed so unfair. One man got a free ride and the
other had to pay everything he had. Where was the equity? What was
God doing? Hadn't Peter proclaimed that God was no respecter of persons?
Didn't that mean everyone would be treated the same way? Salvation
seemed so easy for one man and so hard for another.
When I became a father I understood God's treatment of these two men. To
treat everyone the same is what is unfair. True fairness demands each be
treated according to his need. So it was I understood God is no respecter of
persons. He does treat us all with the same principle, which is, to each
according to his need. Never be tempted to compare your walk with that of
another. Each person is different and each must be saved accordingly. After
all who would go to a physician who gave the same prescription to every
patient?
