Spring of Life -

The New Us
Summer is aging now and our gardens and roadside stands are filled with an
incredible cornucopia of fruits and vegetables. Warm summer evenings are
perfect for sticking a knife into the heart of a big green watermelon causing it
to snap open. Just thinking about lifting the sweet heart out of melon and
tasting it's refreshment causes me to dream of family reunions and church
picnics. Spitting seeds is another great summer activity. Who can spit a seed
the farthest is a game that brings picnic glory.
Who would ever hold a black watermelon seed in their hand and imagine
what it could become if they had never seen a melon? Seeing the seed would
not help one bit. It might even get in the way of understanding the glory of a
fully mature melon.
I have always loved Paul's seed imagery regarding our future in God's
Kingdom. In I Corinthians 15:50 he assures us that flesh and blood does not
inherit the Kingdom. He tells us we can no more imagine what we shall be
after the resurrection than we can imagine a full lush red tomato by looking
at a tiny white seed. It is a mystery. But if we believe the mystery will be
revealed as this corruption puts on incorruption. Mortality will put on
immortality and the new us will rise to live forever. Death is destroyed. It is
the last enemy to be put down. But once down it will not resurrect. It is
down forever as we have victory in Jesus Christ. In Adam we all die. In
Christ we live.
