She Ran Out Of Eternity
I glanced into the recycle bin on my way to the street and noticed my wife
had discarded an Eternity perfume bottle. The first thing that ran through my
mind was, "She ran out of eternity." What a silly thought. No one can ever
run out of eternity. It is ours. The question is whether we will be dead or
alive throughout eternity? Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death;
but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." There will
only be two kinds of people throughout eternity; dead ones and live ones.
The evening of July 15, 1945 Enrico Fermi, the Nobel Prize winning
physicist, calmly took bets from his Manhattan Project colleagues on whether
or not the explosion the next day would ignite the earth's atmosphere.
Obviously you and I are still here so it did not. Had it happened no one
would have had to pay up on the bet and all of us would be spending eternity
dead.
God has different plans for how the world is to end. Paul wrote a very
dramatic description in I Thessalonians 4:16 – 17, "For the Lord himself
shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and
with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which
are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to
meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." I like
God's way better than a manmade mistake on a New Mexico desert.
