Bonbons

Today I discovered a different and wonderful use for spider webs. A black- capped chickadee is harvesting the webs from the corners of my garage. His nest will be soft, warm and very strong. I continue to be amazed at my ignorance. I am surrounded by thousands of wonderful processes of which I not only do not understand; I don't even know they exist.

Each time I observe and learn something new I am overwhelmed by the wonder and interrelated complexity of life forms. But this wonder is not limited to God's creatures but also includes human language and words. We learn words as children. We learn the labels others have given things and we rarely stop to ask why that label. Just yesterday I was in a store walking by the candy and saw a bag of bonbons. It was like a light bulb going off in my head. The French word for good is bon as in bon appetite or bon voyage. These candies are good good. They are so good saying it once isn't enough.

How often I discover the things I do not like are usually the things I do not understand. The people I do not like are those I do not really know. The religions I think are stupid are those beyond my experience. The poor decisions I see others make and cause me to shake my head are usually driven by fears, needs and appetites of which I know nothing about.

Lord, help us to hold our judgments of others until we have earned the right to judge. Help us understand Matthew 7:1.
