Discover Card Ad

One of the credit card companies is currently running an ad with a pretty lady holding up her card and saying something like, "I want my children to have the things I didn't have." I will avoid talking about the implied message that you can buy things without a day of reckoning with interest. I want to focus on the idea that is common among our generation. I hear many people saying they want to give their children things they did not have. It's a wonderful idea if the things they are talking about are love, care, discipline and having someone to read to you before going to bed at night. But if we are talking about material things, unless someone went to bed undernourished and cold, it is not a good idea. Once we are past the basic necessities of life the things a child needs have nothing to do with a credit card or cash or winning the lottery. Actually quite often those things have the potential of harming our children.

If we did not get enough loving as a child then it is very important to give your children what you did not have. If you did have lots of love and were endowed by your caregivers with a sense of pride and self worth, the most important thing you can give your child is exactly what you got. They don't need anything more.

God knows how to give good gifts to His children and we should pray for wisdom that we also would give good gifts to our children. See Luke 11:13 and James 1:5
