Life Requires The Right Tools
There I was standing by a grove of trees not yet in full foliage. The sun was
behind my back so the lighting was perfect. The birds in the top of the trees
were tiny flashing bits of brilliant color as they flitted from branch to branch.
The viewing situation was perfect and I did not have my binoculars with me.
They were most likely some exotic species not yet on my life list but I will
never know because I did not have my binoculars with me!
I was a soldier without a gun, a fisherman without a rod, a dentist without a
drill, a writer without a word processor, a preacher without a Bible.
Everybody needs tools. A scholar needs books and a Christian needs the
Holy Spirit. Without the right tools we cannot do our job. A teacher cannot
go unprepared into a classroom and we cannot go out to face the world with
out the indwelling of God's Spirit. It would be trite at this point to say,
"Don't leave home without it." Therefore, I won't.
There is a fascinating passage in 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12. It says, "Study to
be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as
we commanded you; that ye may walk honestly toward them that are
without, and that ye may have lack of nothing." It is God's will for us to
always be prepared and to have the right tools. We should lack nothing. But
for that to happen we do have to study.
