Tradition

A tradition is a symbol of a value. We develop rituals and ceremonies to commemorate important events which add richness to our lives. This coming week we will celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a tradition that symbolizes through our behavior certain values we hold dear.

This week hundreds of thousands of us will make very special journeys. These journeys will be for the sole behavior of spending time sitting at a table consuming a turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce. That behavior symbolizes our value of family and the importance of significant people we care deeply about. The traditional foods tie us to the richness of our land and the value of gratitude.

Sometimes the press of modern life causes us to think traditions not be so vital. But they remind us our roots. They tell us who we are and what ideals should continue to govern or at least influence our lives.

In the beginning of the Musical “Fiddler on the Roof.” The main character sings that without traditions we would be as shaky as Fiddler on a roof. We would have no stability, no anchor, nothing to hold on to.

This week we revisit our roots. We celebrate a time of thanksgiving. We renew tradition for ourselves and our children. It is a good thing to do.
