Of Cadavers and Muscles

My younger son is studying to be a physical therapist. He tells me he is working on a cadaver. I’m afraid I would not have the stomach for what I think must be a gruesome task. But he bubbles over with enthusiasm for what he is seeing.

He tells me how wonderful it is to see each muscle and how wonderfully and carefully they are connected to work in cooperation with each other. Each muscle is designed to be part of a team effort. No one muscle makes the arm or hand work but it is a combination of a marvelous design.

Our creator God took great care when He made us in His image. It is sin that has marred it. It is sin that has caused it to grow old and die. It is sin that has deformed some of God’s children and has prevented them from using all those wonderful muscles.

When Jesus was here He moved from village to village making crooked legs straight and blind eyes to see. He was the creator. He knew how to fix them. It was not by magic. It was by knowledge and purposeful action. It was by a living relationship with His heavenly Father who retained all the knowledge that Jesus had set aside to become one of us. Jesus once said in John 5:19, "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself;...”

In other places we are encouraged to have that same kind of relationship with the Father. In John 14 Jesus assures us that He is the way to the Father. That wonderful creator God who so carefully designed our muscles is waiting for us to allow Him to redesign our characters into His image.
