Spring of Life -

Some of My College
Students
In one of the classes I am
teaching the students are required to maintain a journal of
new and significant events that occur to them during these
first few weeks of college. Being it is a class of freshman
just about everything is new and significant. The object is
to force them to reflect on what is happening to them during
this new adventure. For many of them they are the first
member of their family to ever attend college.
As I was reading one of
their journals I came across a passage where the young lady
talked about this old man who taught her accounting class. I
was somewhat amused by her reference to his age since he was
a classmate of mine when I was in college. So I think I know
what she thinks of me.
It is interesting to observe
which students we think will graduate four years from now
and which ones will most likely not return the second
semester of their first year. I am dedicated to chasing down
these students at risk to try to intervene. I want them to
know someone on campus cares if they are academically
successful for it is a good indicator of what will happen to
the rest of their lives.
Some continually come late
to class. Some skip class. Some persist in turning in late
work. Some sleep in class. Some just sit and stare. I
realize that I am something strange for many inner-city kids
who have never had much exposure to an old middle class
white man.
I look at them and wonder
where they have been during their short lives. I am sure
many have seen a lot of things I can only imagine. But I
have them for now and while I do I will try to reach them. I
want so much to reach them for success in this life and
definitely for their eternal life in Jesus. As I look at
them I realize that Jesus has the same concerns for you and
me. Im glad about that.
